Want a beautiful hike without all the crowds? Visit Pilot Knob State Preserve in Clay City, Ky. It is the highest point in Powell County and the viewsfrom the top are spectacular. You can see the entire county! This time of the year is best because the trees are not filled in and there are ample opportunities for great views from various spots. The hike is not for the “out of shape” types as it is 1.3 miles straight uphill so you will need a few stops to catch your breath. Basically, it is about 750 in elevation gain. It is also extremely windy near the top. Overall, it takes maybe 2 hours to hike up and back with leaving plenty of time to look around at the top. Pilot Knob is located off Brush Creek Rd. Trail is not pet friendly.
